Building a brighter future
October 2007

Recent investment in a raft of new initiatives has seen Hevey Building Supplies, the independent builder’s merchant based on Crow Lane in Northampton; boost its performance over the last year which has seen the company grow rapidly with sales now in excess of £10m.

Formed in October 2001 by co-founders Neil Hemmington and Mark Mulvey, Hevey now has 27 staff across two branches in Northampton. As Neil Hemmington points out “We recognise that to continue our double digit growth we need to keep investing in our staff and infrastructure. Some of the initiatives we have undertaken over the last year such as a new IT system, new lower emission vehicles and redeveloping our main offices will enable us to remain competitive going forwards.

One such initiative was the launch of new Timber Division at Studland Road behind Bell’s Kitchens in Kingsthorpe. “We set up the timber division in April last year as a new branch on the opposite side of Northampton to our main offices so that our customers can access our products and services more easily.” says Neil.

He continues “We also recently successfully achieved FSC and PEFC certification for our timber products which means that our timber is supplied from sustainable forests. We believe we are the first independent builder’s merchant in the county to gain this certification!”

Mark Mulvey adds “We have also invested in a new bespoke IT system that links all elements of the operation seamlessly and allows us to provide paperless invoicing, which increases efficiency and is good for the environment.”

Mark also points out that Hevey has also invested in a number of new vehicles to meet increased demand and to replace older less environmentally friendly vehicles. “One such replacement was the delivery of a 26 tonne rear steer crane vehicle which meets the new European emissions legislation, which has been introduced to lower the levels of nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emitted by diesel engines. This investment highlights Hevey’s commitment to the environment.” HYPERLINK "http://www.stonemarket.co.uk"

Hevey is also taking its responsibility on how it affects the local community in which it operates seriously. As Mark states “We support a number of local initiatives to show that we care about our impact on the wider community at large. The company has therefore sponsored a number of local football, rugby and cricket clubs which enables these clubs to operate on a sounder financial footing. Commercially, this also makes good business sense for Hevey as many of our customers are involved locally too.”
